Reported Gas Leak Causes Cypress Junction Montessori Evacuation
 
This morning at approximately 10:30 am, Winter Haven Fire with the assistance of Polk Fire Rescue and Winter Haven Police dresponded to a reported gas leak at Cypress Junction Montessori School (330 Ave. B SW, Winter Haven) after a CO detector alarmed inside of one of the school’s buildings.
The students were evacuated by school staff and all students and staff were safely outside when fire crews arrived.
 
Fire crews immediately ensured the gas was shut off. They evaluated the building and found no leak inside. The ultimate source causing the alarm was outside. Crews ventelated the structure and ensured the air quality inside was safe.
 
Students who were complaining of any discomfort were evaluated by medical personnel on scene. 12 students were transported by ambulance as a precaution and 11 transported on a school bus to a local hospital for evaluation. All students were in stable condition and parents were notified by the school.
 
The remaining evacuated students were escorted to a school building that was separate and not impacted by the incident.
Crews remained in scene to ensure the air quality remained safe inside if the structure.
